Step-By-Step Guide To Obtaining The Cat C1 Licence

Step 1: Apply For Your Provisional Licence
  • Obtain forms D2 and D4 (available from the DVLA forms page).
  • Have a medical exam completed by your GP (or we can arrange this). They will fill out the D4 form.
  • Complete the D2 form yourself.
  • Send both completed forms, along with both parts of your current driving licence, to DVLA Swansea.
  • No fee is required. You should receive your provisional licence within 10–15 working days.
  • Once you receive your provisional, you can book your theory test with us.
Step 2: Prepare For The Theory Test
  • Study materials (books and discs) are available from us for a small fee.
  • The theory test is a two-part test which can be sat at the same time:
  • Part 1 – Multiple Choice: 100 questions (pass mark: 85/100).
  • Part 2 – Hazard Perception: 19 video clips (pass mark: 67/100).
Step 3: CPC Case Study Test (Optional But Recommended)

If you do not have 'grandfather rights' to drive Category C1 vehicles, it is beneficial to take the CPC Case Study test alongside your theory tests.

Step 4: Practical Driver Training
  • Once you pass both parts of the theory test, you can begin practical driver training.
  • Our training is conducted to DSA test standards, followed by the practical driving test.
