Hold a Provisional Category C licence.
Step 1: Apply For Your Provisional Licence
- Obtain forms D2 and D4 (available from the DVLA forms page – scroll down near the bottom).
- Have a medical exam completed by your GP or we can arrange a medical for you. They will fill out the D4 form.
- Complete the D2 form yourself.
- Send both completed forms, along with both parts of your current driving licence, to DVLA Swansea.
- No fee is required, and you should receive your provisional licence within 10–15 working days.
- Once you receive your provisional, you can book your Theory Test with us.
Step 2: Prepare For The Theory Test
- Study materials (books and discs) are available from us for a small fee.
- The theory test is a 2 part test which can be sat at the same time:
- Part 1 – Multiple Choice: 100 questions (pass mark: 85/100).
- Part 2 – Hazard Perception: 19 video clips (pass mark: 67/100).
Step 3: Initial CPC
- It's possible to gain an HGV licence without completing Initial CPC if you are not going to be driving commercially, but if you do not have your DQC and you then drive commercially, you are breaking the law.
- Module 1 – You will be presented with 7 scenarios to review and then answer a series of questions based on what you have learned. The test lasts 75 minutes and you must score 40 out of 50 to pass. You can then take Module 2 (you will need your pass reference number to book Module 2).
- Module 2 – You will be asked a series of questions to demonstrate your all-round practical knowledge and skill, covering vehicle information, wider roadcraft, personal safety, illegal immigration and other important issues. To pass, you need to score at least 15 out of 20 in each topic area and an overall score of 80%.
Step 4: Practical Driver Training
- Once you pass both parts of the theory test, you can begin practical driver training.
- Our training is conducted to DSA test standards, followed by the practical driving test.
- Our trainers have years of experience to guide you through the process of obtaining your Cat C licence.
- Training will be held over 5 consecutive days, allowing you time to become fully competent and legally compliant to drive HGVs.
- The training covers HGV driver requirements, pre-journey safety checks, loading/unloading, safe and legal driving, and more.
Step 5: Initial CPC
- Once you pass both parts of the theory test, you can begin practical driver training.
- Our training is conducted to DSA test standards, followed by the practical driving test.
On Passing The Test
You'll be qualified to drive any rigid vehicle over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer up to 750kg.
To keep your licence up to date, you must undertake 35 hours of Periodic CPC training every 5 years. You can book CPC training here.
