Overview
Holding an HGV Class 1 (C+E) licence allows the operation to drive the largest vehicles in the logistics industry, with a maximum weight of up to 44 tonnes.
Eligibility Requirements
Hold a full car licence.
Be 18 or older (with some exceptions).
Gain the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
If Qualifying For The First Time
Apply for a provisional HGV/bus licence.
Pass the 5 CPC tests.
Do 35 hours' CPC training every 5 years.
Step-By-Step Guide To Obtaining The Cat C+E Licence
Step 1: Apply For Your Provisional Licence
- Obtain forms D2 and D4 (available from the DVLA forms page; scroll down to near the bottom of the page).
- Have a medical exam completed by your GP (or we can arrange a medical for you). They will fill out the D4 form.
- Complete the D2 form yourself.
- Send both completed forms, along with both parts of your current driving licence, to DVLA Swansea.
- No fee is required, and you should receive your provisional licence within 10–15 working days.
- Once you receive your provisional, you can book your Theory Test with us.
Step 2: Prepare For The Theory Test
- Study materials (books and discs) are available from us for a small fee.

- Part 3 - Driver CPC Case Study
Step 3: Practical Driver Training
- Once you pass both parts of the theory test, you can begin practical driver training.
- Our training is conducted to DSA test standards, followed by the practical driving test.
- Our trainers have years of experience to guide you through the process of obtaining your Class 1 licence.
- The training covers HGV driver requirements, pre-journey safety checks, loading/unloading, safe and legal driving, and more.
On Passing The Test
You'll be qualified to drive the largest and heaviest lorries on the road.
To keep your licence up to date, you must undertake 35 hours of Periodic CPC training every 5 years.
